Welcome to Roving Code: Two Distinct Drives

If there are two constants in my life, they’re software engineering and Range Rovers. They might sound like completely separate passions, but for me they’ve always been linked by the same curiosity: how things are built, how they break, and how they can be made better. Software and Range Rovers both do a lot of breaking!

By trade, I’m a software engineer who’s spent the last 15+ years architecting cloud platforms, building high-performing engineering teams, and rolling up my sleeves to debug everything from distributed systems to CI/CD pipelines. I’ve led teams through platform re-architectures, introduced AI-assisted development workflows, and learned a few hard lessons about scalability, resilience, and simplicity along the way. I’ll be sharing those lessons here in plain language, with a focus on the practical over the theoretical.

But the other side of my life runs on petrol, not compute. I’ve owned a string of Range Rovers over the years, each with its own quirks and character. Right now, the fleet includes a 1993 Classic LSE soft dash a rare and beautiful beast with all the charm you’d expect and a 2011 L322 with the bullet proof 4.4 TDV8.

This blog, Roving Code, is where those two worlds meet. Some weeks I’ll be diving into engineering topics from cloud-native architecture to AI-augmented development. Other weeks, you’ll find me elbow-deep in grease, documenting the trials and triumphs of keeping old Range Rovers on the road. And sometimes, I’ll draw connections between the two: because debugging a flaky distributed system and troubleshooting Lucas electronics have more in common than you might think.

## What to Expect

- **Engineering Deep Dives** – clear, practical insights into software development, cloud architecture, and DevOps practices. I'll share real-world experiences from my engineering career, covering topics from distributed systems to CI/CD pipelines and emerging technologies. Posts will regularly include code samples, architecture diagrams, and actionable takeaways that you can apply to your own projects. Expect pragmatic solutions rather than theoretical discussions.
- **Restoration Stories** – tales (and probably a few rants) from the garage, especially around my Classic LSE and L322. From engine rebuilds to electronic troubleshooting, I'll document the challenges, solutions, and occasional triumphs of keeping vintage British engineering on the road—complete with photos, parts lists, and hard-earned wisdom for fellow enthusiasts.
- **Personal Insights** – reflections on life, work, and the things that matter most to me. I'll share thoughts on neurodiversity, career growth, and the occasional philosophical musing. These posts will be less frequent but more personal, offering a glimpse into the human side of technical work.
